UE/R: Zebilla Police kill 1 armed robber, another on the run

Lifeless body of the deceased armed robber

The police in Zebilla in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region shot and killed a suspected armed robber in and exchange of fire between them (police) and two armed robbers last Friday October 27 on the Bolgatanga-Bawku highway.

Superintendent of police Albert Addiita, Zebilla Police commander who confirmed this in a telephone interview with TopNews Ghana explained that the robbery attempt occurred at the Tilli forest when the driver of a Mercedes Benz Bus with registration number WR 1789 C, came under attack at about 2:00am when two armed robbers blocked the road with lodges and signaled the driver with a  flashlight to stop.

According to the commander, in an attempt to dodge the barricades, the driver of the bus veered off the road and plunged the bus into a gutter. The robbers then swarmed on the bus in an attempt to rob the passengers but upon noticing the presence of the police, the robbers opened fire and the police returned same.

Superintendent Addiita, said  the robbers who could not withstand the fire from his men fled into the forest but a search team of police officers at daybreak found one of the robbers in the forest with gunshot wounds and a locally matured pistol on him. He was rushed to Zebilla government hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The body of the deceased robber, aged between 30-35 years, has since been deposited at the Upper East Regional morgue in Bolgatanga for preservation while the police were on a manhunt for the second robber still at large.

The latest robbery incident brings to about four major robbery cases at the Tillia forest this year. Many travelers and victims of previous robbery attacks had blamed their ordeals on the bad nature of the Bolgatanga-Bawku road, especially at the Tilli forest.

In some of the attacks, lives were lost and personal belongings of victims taken away from them.
