At long last, the wait is over and residents of Saboba and its adjoining communities, traders from far and near; including those from neighbouring Togo can now hive a sigh of relief after GCB Bank Ltd extended a branch to the town.
Saboba is predominantly a farming town and the district capital of Saboba District in the Northern Region of Ghana. Though most dwellers of the area are engaged in farming as their major occupation, an appreciable number of them are also into varied professions which teaching is principal among them.
For several decades, the town had been without a bank even though efforts had been made to get one. As a result, salaried workers, traders, farmers and other groups and individuals who wanted to transact any banking businesses had to journey from Saboba to Yendi which is about 36 miles away. Others also traveled to the regional capital, Tamale, to do same.
While efforts were still been made to have a dream of extending a branch of the GCB Bank to the town realized, GN Bank took advantage of the long delay and opened a branch there a couple of years ago. Though this move was seen as timely, some people still had to travel to Yendi for their salaries and other banking services because most of them were already hooked to the GCB Bank before GN Bank opened its branch.
On Thursday December 15, 2016, the chiefs and people of Saboba witnessed an inaugural ceremony that led to the opening of a new branch of GCB Bank. Inaugurating the bank, John Adolf Ali, the District Chief Executive for Saboba, observed the opening of the bank in the area is a big relief to residents and non-residents alike especially workers as it will save their traveling time to Yendi and Tamale for their salaries.
Recounting the hard work that went into the opening of the branch, the DCE entreated the people to develop the habit of saving with the bank for the good of their future.
He used the occasion to thank the people of Saboba for conducting themselves orderly before, during and after the just ended presidential and parliamentary elections.
On his part, Ernest Agbesi, the Managing Director of GCB Bank Ltd, said since the re-branding of GCB bank, Saboba was among the places for them to have opened a new branch and gave the assurance that the branch has come to stay.
With products such as SME banking, internet banking , GCB mobile banking and GCB Personal loans, Mr. Agbesi implored residents to take advantage of the bank’s investment facilities to expand their businesses.
Staff of the branch were introduced to the public.
In attendance were the chief of Saboba, Ubor Chib Binalibeme Kanbonjah and his elders, the district police commander and members of the clergy.
